I wanted to teach the boys, and remind myself, that Jesus took
He was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed.
Jesus was in every way human, yet without sin. He was fully God and fully man. It was not his punishment that he endured on that cross 2000 years ago, but

He didn't have to do it. He didn't have to go through with it. He had a choice. And he chose
He was oppressed and afflicted yet he did not open his mouth; he was led like a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth.
Once sin entered the world, there was a barrier between God and man. God is perfect, holy. He cannot be with sin. And it broke his heart not to be with his children. A sacrifice had to be made. Someone had to die.
Indeed, under the law almost everything is purified with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgivess of sins.
