{Faith and Fitness}: Day In and Day Out

So the thing is, the key to a healthy lifestyle is consistency and discipline. It's day in and day out. My sister is having bridal portraits in a few weeks and I will be in a few of them with her. And in about 6 weeks my family will be taking a trip to the beach. Now let the panic set in. Because I've been in a rut.

I'm not even sure when it happened. But over the last two months I've been eating poorly and not exercising at all. Sure I've been active but I haven't been doing anything that will tone me up. And now that I'm about to be apart of 2 events that make you completely and totally aware of your body composition, I'm freaking out. Because I know better than to let myself go like that and because I'm so mad at myself for doing that. It's like I kept putting it off because I thought I had time, but now here we are and it's the middle of May! I swear I blinked and 6 months went by.

But here's the other thing, it's not too late to start NOW. And that's what I keep telling myself. So many times I find myself throwing in the towel before even getting started because I already feel overwhelmingly behind. And that's exactly where I am now... feeling overwhelmed at the thought of getting into a swimsuit and feeling a sense of regret for ruining all the hard work I put in previously. On the one hand it seems easier to not start because in my mind I won't be where I could have been by the time we head to the beach. But that is so so so silly, because if I start eating right and exercising now, I'll be better off in 6 weeks than where I am now. I've got to let that mindset go. I can't be drowning in regret and expect to get anywhere.

So that's what I'm doing. I'm starting now. I call it dieting, but what it is, is making healthy food choices day in and day out. It's exercising consistently. It's making a lifestyle change. Because I want to be healthy forever, not just a couple months out of the year. It's discipline. And sometimes the results take awhile, but that's okay.

And it's never too late to get started. Or in my case, re-started.

"For the moment, all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it." Hebrews 12:11

{Faith and Fitness}: Stay Fit Doing An Activity You Love

If you have read my bio, you know that I am engaged! Brendan and I will be getting married in July and we are very excited! Right now we are working on our pre-marital counseling and our counselor suggested that we find something that we both like to do and use it as an anchor in our relationship! Our anchor…cycling! This weekend we did the MS150, a 150 mile bike ride over the span of two days to raise money and awareness for Multiple Sclerosis. We had so much fun spending time together and being active! As hard as the ride was, having someone that you love to be around, right there with you encouraging you along the way, made it seem so easy!

When thinking of ways to stay active it is important to think of things that you enjoy doing! The more you like the activity and look forward to doing it, the more you will get out of it. I love playing volleyball, and do it at least once a week. That is a great way for me to burn calories without realizing that I am even working out! Whatever you decide to do, have fun! Just a tip, from personal experience, if you are going to do a big event…make sure you train for it!!! Showing up and trying to go all out is not a good idea for your body and recovery! Thank goodness for AdvoCare products and Epsom salt baths!!

{Faith and Fitness}: Ready, Set, GOAL!

We all have goals and ideas of what we would like to accomplish. Some of us want a faster 5k time. Some of us want to cut back on the calories. Some of us just want to become more disciplined in the area of fitness.  Lets cut to the chase, we all have goals but how many of us are consistently working towards achieving them? So often we get off track or make excuses as to why we were not intentional in moving forward. Below are a couple reasons we get off track (Roadblocks)  and ways we can combat that (Action).

-ROADBLOCK:   Satan does not want you to move forward when it comes to growth, especially when you are honoring and growing in the Lord through your goal setting/achieving. He wants us to believe lies and become stagnant. If you aren't growing or moving forward then you are of no worry to him.

-ACTION: The bible tells us to meditate on the Lord's word day and night. Fill your mind, renew your mind so that you can have a clear focus and vision and listen to the Truth that the Lord has told you and not the lies the enemy uses to disarm and hurt you. The Lord has come to give you life but the enemy has come to kill, steal and destroy. (Ps. 119, Romans 12:1-3, John 10:10)

- ROADBLOCK: We do not have written goals that are visible to be seen daily. DO NOT LEAVE YOUR FUTURE or GOALS to your memory.

-ACTION: Write them everywhere! Let it be a daily reminder of what you want and where you are going. Life gets hectic but if you have the reminder around you all the time its easier to stay focused.

-ROADBLOCK: You have not created a discipline/habit to achieve your goal. So its hit or miss.

-ACTION: It takes 21 days to form a habit. That means in the pursuit of your goal you must do the same action 21 days in a row for it to begin to be habitual. Try this, pick an action that will help you (daily) get closer to your goal. Start it within the next 48 hours, stay with it for 21 days and see what happens. :)

- ROADBLOCK: Comparison!!! Too often we are zapped of motivation or joy in the journey because we begin to compare our progress or journey with that of others.

-ACTION: STOP comparing! If you are moving forward and honoring the Lord as you do, then it should not matter what others are doing. Comparison can rob us of so much joy. It creates blinders that inhibit us from seeing the true progress we have made.

I would love for you to post your goals at the bottom of this and check back in next month to let me know how you have done! You can also email me at lollie.barksdale22@gmail.com. I would love to encourage you and pray for you as you start, continue and accomplish your goals!

{Faith & Fitness}: Run the Race

Over the last couple weeks I've been brainstorming ideas of what my next Faith & Fitness post would be.  Should I give some tips on exercise? Or food intake? Or both? I've been mulling it over in my mind making mental notes here and there when I would think of something that I thought would work. And then Monday happened. The 117th Boston Marathon.

A day where thousands of people set out to accomplish one of their greatest goals in one of the world's best known marathons. An event held every year on Patriots' Day which commemorates the anniversary of the Battles of Lexington and Concord, the first battles of the American Revolutionary War. An event inspired by the first successful modern-day marathon held in the 1896 Summer Olympics. An event where people fly in from all over the country to race. An event that I can only imagine leaves you feeling accomplished and with the greatest sense of joy and pride because you finished it! You did it! You ran the most well known marathon.

But this year, instead of feeling joy and pride, people were literally brought to their knees, knocked off their feet, trampled on, stripped of their joy, and most couldn't even finish the race.... Instead, they were left with fear, chaos, uncertainty.... and some lost their limbs, lost their lives, or lost a friend or family member.  All in a senseless act. It's heartbreaking.

I mean, can you imagine? You are in the zone, listening to your iPod, thinking, "I'm almost there. I'm almost finished! I'm about to make a huge check mark on my bucket list." And then, as you near the finish line, you see total, complete chaos. Or you're on the sidelines, cheering on your friends and family members and then suddenly there is a loud explosion, people shrieking, crying, blood everywhere. It makes me sick.

All I can think is, "what is this world coming to?!" So, so many senseless acts over the last year (and more). We are heartbroken and disgusted and can't believe it, but we mustn't be surprised. In John 10:10 it tells us that "the thief comes only to steal and to kill and to destroy." Y'all, the enemy is real.

But what are we going to do about it? What can we do about it? We support. We trust in God. And we exercise our spiritual fitness.

"You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, BECAUSE THE ONE WHO IS IN YOU IS GREATER THAN THE ONE WHO IS IN THE WORLD." 1 John 4:4

We don't retreat. We don't withdraw. We don't stand around and watch. We HOPE in the Lord and give hope to our friends and family, particularly in the running community. We get out and exercise and PRAY while we do it. We don't just say we will pray.... we actually pray. We wake up and put on the full armor of God. We let the Word be living and active in our lives. We trust in the Lord with all our hearts. AND WE RUN THE RACE. We don't stop.

"Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize." 1 Corinthians 9:24

So get out there and run the race, because there's still a race to be run. We help where we can and be a light in this dark, dark world. And while you're at it, do some good. And be intentional.

"Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good." Romans 12:21

{Faith and Fitness}: A Few Things I Have Learned About Healthy Eating

Do you ever feel like you are caught in a battle between food and fitness? I fight that battle every day! I love food, but I also love the feeling of being healthy and in shape. I have learned a few good lessons this year about healthy eating…

1. You can eat what you want, just not as much as you want! My biggest problem has always been portion control. I think the hardest part about what I eat, is that I am getting older. Not being a collegiate athlete that can eat whatever they want, has taken its toll on my body! So, this year when I don’t have the options of eating healthy, I need to practice portion control.

2.  Exercise is good in overall health, but it’s more about how you eat! I love to exercise, and I love the feeling I have after, but that’s not the biggest piece of overall health. Keep in mind that your body can only handle what it is trained to, you have to build your workouts up to a high level; you can’t start there.

3. My body is a temple! God loves us exactly the way we are. He is not concerned with our weight or clothes size; He is concerned about our heart. Health and fitness are good, but not to the point of it becoming an idol that is affecting our relationship with the Lord. We should be more concerned about feeding our spirit hunger…

“He humbled you and let you be hungry, and fed you with manna which you did not know, nor did your fathers know, that He might make you understand that man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by everything that proceeds out of the mouth of the Lord.” Deuteronomy 8:3

I’m sure you already know most of these things to be true, but this is what has been on my mind this week. I have been doing an HerbalCleanse through AdvoCare and have seen great results. This is just a reminder that I give myself to stay on track with what really matters!

{Faith and Fitness}: What Inspires You?

This is my first year to watch The Biggest Loser on NBC and I have thoroughly enjoyed seeing the changes people are making in their lives. I knew the show was about weight loss and having a healthier future, but I did not realize how much they deal with the inner turmoil that each contestant is facing. They don’t just help them lose weight; they deal with what is causing the “emotional eating.” I love that they are truly changing their future and making sure they don’t end up back where they started.

Through this season I realized how much I get on “kicks.” One day it’s cooking, the next it’s working out, then cleaning and organizing…and so on.  It dawned on me that when I have these moments I throw myself into it completely; I research it, study it, and aim for perfection…but it always leads to failure! I am never able to keep up with the high demands and expectations I set for myself. I always want more; dealing with the surface of my life never seems to be enough.

So, what motivates me now? My mind set is now on dealing with what’s on the inside. How come I don’t hunger for my relationship with the Lord and research Him and study the bible the way I do the other things in my life?  Over the past year I have realized that I am a woman of control, not in a way that you would think, but in a way that I am a perfectionist and if things are going to be done right, then I better do them myself! Living that way puts a damper on my relationship with my fiancé and with the Lord, and that’s not fun for anyone! I end up wearing myself out and driving others crazy! If I am going to fill my deep longing to connect with the Lord then I am going to have to relinquish the control!

I have recently started reading a book called Spirit Hunger, by Gari Meachem, wife of Bobby Meachem, former Yankee short stop and a current coach of the Houston Astros. This book has been great insight on how to let go of control and fall into the arms of Jesus and fill that longing. One thing that she mentions in the books is that “the opposite of love is not hate, it is control.” The control is what is getting in the way of fully loving the Lord and having a deep relationship with Him, longing to learn and know more.

“O God, You are my God; I shall seek You earnestly,
My soul thirsts for You, my flesh yearns for You,
In a dry and weary land where there is no water.”
Psalm 63:1

{Faith and Fitness}: Portion Control

If I didn’t mention it before, I am a former collegiate athlete. It was great in those days having someone tell you when to work out and how hard to push yourself.  During that time I could pretty much eat whatever I wanted and still be in amazing shape.

Now that I am out in the real world without the metabolism I used to have, or the time to spend 4 hours in the gym every day, I really have to watch what I eat. I tried telling myself that I wasn’t allowed to have anything unhealthy, so I cut out all fried food, dessert, and soda…but that didn’t last very long. I battled for a while trying to figure out how I could stay in shape without starving myself. I tried finding the time to work out for at least an hour a day, but that was also difficult to maintain.

Finally I figured it out!! I could still eat the things I enjoy, as long as I practiced portion control!

In our society we are served way more food than we need, and we eat until we are full and sometimes sick. The above chart gives you an idea of how we should be eating and will help you to begin implementing portion control in your own diet.

{Faith and Fitness}: Just Get Movin'

Hi everyone, my name is Jessica and I am wife to Seth; mom to Caleb, Eli, and Noah; sister to Erin and Sarah; daughter to Jack and Heidi; friend to many; and a follower of Jesus Christ. I am a former collegiate athlete, volleyball player, and high school volleyball and soccer coach. After adding my 3rd kiddo to the mix, I decided to transition from being a teacher and a coach to being a stay at home mom. It was incredibly hard leaving behind a job I loved, but I am enjoying being home. And now I’m thrilled to be able to blog at Worthy of the Prize on the 3rd Wednesday of each month as part of the Faith and Fitness series!  It’ll give me a chance to talk about and engage in things I’ve done for so long and used to do at my job! Now, I’m not claiming to be an expert on health and fitness by any means, but I figure we can journey through this year together and encourage each other as we set out to accomplish our goals.

Speaking of goals, good ol’ Dave Ramsey says, “A goal without a plan is just a dream.” And how right he is. Dreams are a great thing! I have many dreams (hello, Pinterest, with my dream home, dream haircut, & dream body); but if you ever want your dreams to be a reality, you have to get intentional. So, you change your dream to a goal and then you come up with your strategy or plan to get there. If you don’t have a plan, you aren’t going to make it very far! Plus, it’s in the plan that you can be held accountable.
This year for my family, one of my goals is for us to be more active! Yes, of course, I want to lose weight and exercise more (hello, baby weight and trip to the beach!!!!!!), but more than that I want our children to grow up loving to simply be active. To run and play outside. To ride their bikes and jump on the trampoline. To do push-ups and sit-ups for fun. And even stretch! I don’t want them to get in the mindset of thinking that fitness has to be a certain activity or has to be losing weight. I want them to learn they can be active in their daily lives and not necessarily have to formally workout all the time. Because I do believe they (and the rest of us) would be a whole lot healthier and fit if we were active all day and not just during a 45-minute workout.

So to achieve this goal, our plan is to do just that... be active. We are going to “power off” in the afternoons. Instead of only watching shows when we get home from school, we are going to play outside, too. We are going to go on family walks and bike rides in the evenings when the weather warms up and the days get longer. We are going to jump WITH them on the trampoline instead of just supervising. We are going to play baseball and soccer and tag and hide and seek WITH them. Think of all the extra family time we’ll get by being active with our kids. And I can almost guarantee I'll feel a lot better, too.

What can you change in your daily life that can make you more fit? (By you, I mean me, too). Park further away from the entrance of the store. Stand while working on the computer. Get rid of your maid (or maybe just have her come less often) and do some housework yourself. And if you just can’t completely kick your TV habit (I know, I like Downton Abbey, too), then do some lunges or sit-ups or bicep curls while you watch. I’d say during the commercials, but honestly, who watches commercials anymore?! Use the stairs instead of the elevator. Walk places instead of driving. Ride your bike on Saturday mornings instead of sleeping in. Or sleep in and ride your bike anyways. Whatever it is you change, just get movin’!!!!

I do hope you'll keep checking back in with this Faith and Fitness series. I haven't a clue what this year will hold. But I do know I want my family to be more active. And I do know I have a good 10-15 pounds to lose. And I do know, that above all, I want to grow deeper in my relationship with Christ. And I do know we can do it together!

"Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one receives the prize? So run that you may obtain it. Every athlete exercises self control in all things. They do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable. So I do not run aimlessly; I do not box as one beating the air. But I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified." I Corinthians 9:24-27

{Faith and Fitness}: Small Changes Lead to Big Results

Happy New Year! I hope that this year brings you great things in the Lord and in fitness! I wanted to take the time to give you a little encouragement as you make lifestyle changes to help you reach your New Year’s resolutions. If you are anything like me then you have said that you will be healthier in 2013! The important thing to remember is that it doesn’t take drastic changes; you don’t have to stop eating or workout for hours a day. Adding 30 minutes of walking a day and practicing portion control can make a huge difference in your overall health and doesn’t require much planning. For help on easy/healthy recipes and encouragement in your lifestyle changes, check out my page Fit 4 Life here.

There are also products out there to aid in weight loss and overall fitness. I am a huge supporter of AdvoCare and use their products on a daily basis. They are not meant to take the place of healthy eating and exercise, but to give you better results faster. They have something as simple as Spark, which is an energy drink to help you make it through a long day and keep you focused, all the way to the 24 Day Challenge, which lays out an eating plan for 24 days and the products to go with it to help you jump start a lifestyle change and weight loss! They also just came out with workout videos that only last 24 minutes! This would be a great way to add in a workout in a short amount of time! Check out Advocare here to see their products and get started on your weight loss adventure today!

Keep in mind that persistance is far more important than perfection! Growing up as an athlete there were times I was faced with challenges that I wasn’t quite sure I could handle. My favorite verse to get me through those times was Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength.” I always knew that whatever struggle I faced I could make it through as long as I leaned on the Lord!
