A Glimpse Into Our Easter Celebration

I just wanted to pop in and show you a few pictures from our Easter weekend!

This is the Easter Lily that I sent to my parents down in Texas. So gorgeous!

It all started with a baseball game in our front yard on Good Friday. Little A vs. Little E. So funny and such a beautiful morning!

That afternoon we went out to lunch with some friends and took the boys to one of those warehouses filled with bounce houses. They had a blast!

That night we came home and made some Easter treats, including my first attempt at making cake pops. I thought they turned out pretty good for my first try!

I already showed you the Resurrection Rolls that we made here.

Saturday morning we had an egg hunt at the park with our church. It was cold!

Don't worry, Little E is not mad. Everytime he says "cheese" he gets this intense look on his face. It is hilarious!

That evening The Band Perry held a free concert downtown (their hometown) right in front of our church (big building on left). It was awesome!

And of course on Easter morning, we got all dressed up and went to church to celebrate a RISEN SAVIOR!!!

That night we celebrated with friends. Dinner and another egg hunt!

{Resurrection Rolls}: Did the Resurrection Really Happen?

Yesterday morning, the boys and I read the Easter story together and then proceeded to make Resurrection Rolls for the first time.

I wanted them to know that the tomb was empty.

After the rolls had finished baking and the marshmallow on the inside had disappeared representing the empty tomb, Little E was so impressed he ran to tell Little A, who simply replied "the marshmallow just melted from the heat in the oven." Ha! It's hard living with a such a smarty pants in the house!

Thankfully while reading the Easter story, Little A said he "was glad we had it to read or else people might think that Easter was just about candy and eggs, but really it is because Jesus had to die for our sins." I guess it works both ways! :)

Seriously though, I am so thankful that my boys, even at the young ages of 6 and 4, are beginning to form their own thoughts and opinions about Jesus, his birth, death and resurrection.

Which leads me to the question, "what about you?"

Do you believe in the resurrection?

You see, the question is not "did Jesus die on the cross?" It is pretty much historical fact that Jesus Christ was crucified under Pontious Pilate.

The question is not "was the tomb empty?" The Roman soldiers themselves (the ones guarding his tomb) admitted that the tomb was empty. 

The question IS "what happened to Jesus' body?"

The Roman soldiers tried to point the blame to Jesus' disciples, saying they stole the body.

If that was true, why would the disciples go on to proclaim his resurrection, being ridiculed and tortured, eventually dying horrible deaths, all  for a cause they knew to be a lie?

You can read here why I absolutely believe the resurrection really did happen.

But it doesn't matter what I think. You must decide for yourself.

If you are one who struggles to believe that God actually exists, or that the resurrection really did happen, I highly suggest reading the works of Lee Strobel, a former atheist journalist from Yale who set out to prove that God did not exist and that the resurrection could not have happened, and in the process ended up becoming a believer himself. Some of his books include, "The Case for Faith" and "The Case for Christ." I have read both of these and they are fabulous.

Will you allow him to give you new life here on this earth and eternal life in Heaven when you die?

{Hope for the Home} Linky Party: 12 Activities to Keep Easter Alive All Year Long

Another Easter has come and gone. My favorite holiday is over. Sigh.

All that remains is a house full of empty baskets, plastic eggs and sugar-crazed children.

But I don't want Easter to be over. I want these beautiful boys of mine {yes, I know I am biased but seriously...beautiful} to marvel in the resurrection all year long. It is not simply an event that took place 2000 years ago or even a once a year celebration. It is a way of life.

I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection and the fellowship of sharing in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, and so, somehow, to attain to the resurrection from the dead. Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already been made perfect, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. {Philippians 3:10-12}

I want to keep Easter alive in our hearts and home all year round. Will you join me?

And yes, we Texans love our bluebonnets! ;)

As soon as Easter is over, make an Easter Egg Countdown using 12 of your leftover plastic eggs. Inside each egg write 1 of the following activities on a piece of paper. Open 1 egg together as a family at the beginning of the corresponding month and be sure to complete that activity together before the month is over. When you have completed all 12 activities it will be time for Easter again and you can go here for 12 Ways to Make Easter about Jesus!

{1} April: Read Five Ways to Celebrate Easter Every Day and make a list of how you can incorporate these suggestions into your everyday lives.

{2} May: Grow Monarch Butterflies or build a Butterfly Garden and discuss the fact that in Christ we have new life and are a new creation. {2 Corinthians 5:17}

{3} June: Do an Easter Egg Fitness Treasure Hunt, using your leftover plastic eggs, as a reminder that our bodies are living sacrifices. {Romans 12:1-2}

{4} July: Celebrate Independance Day, pointing out that we have freedom in Christ because of what Jesus did for us on the cross. {Galatians 5:1} Download this free printable to display in your home.

{5} August: Write a letter telling someone who has wronged you that you forgive them, in response to the grace that God lavished upon us through Christ's sacrifice on the cross.

{6} September: Do a service project for someone in need (or perform a Random Act of Kindness), reminding everyone that it is important to make sacrifices for others in the same way that Christ made the ultimate sacrifice for us on the cross.

{7} October: Go on a nature walk or take a trip to see the fall colors, discussing how God's creation reveals his glory - the same glory that was displayed through Christ's death and resurrection. {Psalm 19}

{8} November: Make a Thankful Tree and have everyone add things to it that God did for them this past year that they are thankful for, highlighting Jesus' death on the cross as the greatest thing he has ever done for us.

{9} December: Read through Max Lucado's One Incredible Moment, discussing why Jesus came to Earth and how his birth points the way to his death and resurrection.

{10} January: Choose One Word for your family to focus on in the new year - relate it to your desire to put Christ first. Make Family Art to hang in your home as a reminder. Have each family member choose a personal verse that they are going to memorize and meditate on that year. Make Scripture Hands to reinforce it.

{11} February: Make John 3:16 Valentines and pass them out to family and friends.

{12} March: Gather up all of your crosses or make Easter Crosses and display them in a prominent place in your home, along with this Free Easter Printable, to keep your focus on Christ's suffering during the approaching Easter season.

Most importantly, attend church together as a family all year long - not just at Christmas and Easter.

{Hope for the Home} Linky Party: It Should've Been You {Me}

We did it. We made our Handprint Easter Lambs, in honor of Passion Week.

I wanted to teach the boys, and remind myself, that Jesus took our my place on the cross. He was the perfect, spotless lamb. The sacrifice for all mankind.

He was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed.

Jesus was in every way human, yet without sin. He was fully God and fully man. It was not his punishment that he endured on that cross 2000 years ago, but ours mine.

We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all.

He didn't have to do it. He didn't have to go through with it. He had a choice. And he chose you me. He could've saved himself, but instead he chose to save you me.

He was oppressed and afflicted yet he did not open his mouth; he was led like a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth.

Once sin entered the world, there was a barrier between God and man. God is perfect, holy. He cannot be with sin. And it broke his heart not to be with his children. A sacrifice had to be made. Someone had to die.

Indeed, under the law almost everything is purified with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgivess of sins.

It should've been you me.

You see, at just the right time, while we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous man, though for a good man someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us me. {Romans 5:6-8}

The boys and I did most of the items listed last Easter and we had a blast! My hope was to find ways to point them to the cross since our world likes to distract us with other American holiday traditions, forgetting the true reason for the season.

Now, don't get me wrong, we do all of the fun bunny stuff too. But I wanted to make sure we took time to remember the resurrection, the very foundation of our faith and the reason for the Easter celebration.

I hope you enjoy it and that you and your family get to try some of the fun activities listed over the next few weeks! Now I just need to decide which activities I am going to do with my boys this year! :)

Free March Scripture Printable: A New Creation

As you know, I have decided that as part of my goal to reach the nations for Christ this year (reach being my 2013 word), I will provide a free scripture printable for you every month this year...because it all starts in the home, reaching our families for Christ.

This is my March print. If you have been around here very long, you know that spring is my favorite time of year and that Easter is my favorite holiday. It just makes me so happy!

How can you not be happy when the sun is out, the birds are chirping, the flowers are in bloom and you have the promise of new life in Christ! No matter who you are or what you have done. No matter your past or your future. You have the hope of a brand new life (eternal life) through a personal relationship with the Creator of the universe.

It doesn't get any better than that!

{The Resurrection}: Your Response is What Matters

In honor of Easter, we made a Resurrection Garden. I wanted the boys to have a visual reminder that the tomb was empty. Now we wait for the grass to grow.

Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here; he is risen as he said! {Luke 24:5-6}
The angel rolled that stone away, not because Jesus needed help getting out, but because we needed to see that he was not there.

We did not actually get to make our garden until yesterday evening. My goal was to do it over the weekend but we ran out of time and then we all ended up sick. Like, laying in bed for 2 days straight kind of sick and still not completely recovered.

After reading Tina's {Hope for the Home} post from yesterday, I thought maybe it is a good thing that we are making our garden after Easter, because like she said, we need to continue to marvel in the resurrection all year round. It is not simply an event that took place 2000 years ago or even a once a year celebration. It is a way of life.

Which leads me to the question...how has the resurrection changed you?

You cannot encounter an event of this magnitude, or the entire life of Jesus for that matter, and walk away the same.

You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son of God, or else a madman or something worse. You can shut him up for a fool, you can spit at him and kill him as a demon or you can fall at his feet and call him Lord and God, but let us not come with any patronizing nonsense about his being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us. He did not intend to. {C.S. Lewis (Mere Christianity)}

{Hope for the Home}: Let's Marvel!

I'm sitting here this morning in the quiet. Baskets with sparkly green plastic grass are sitting here beside me spilling over with opened plastic eggs, candy wrappers, and the remnants of yesterday.

Another Easter has past.

I keep thinking about a question a friend posted yesterday on facebook. He asked

"How will today impact tomorrow?"

It keeps rolling around in my mind....tomorrow is now today. Will I just clean up Easter like these baskets and tuck them away for another year?

Our Pastor talked about marveling over the Resurrection. I want to marvel...I love that word! What if we really just sat and marveled at Christ investing His very life in us. What if we sat daily and asked Him to reveal to our hearts a little more...to just sit and steep deep in His love.

How would that impact our today?

Our very faith is cemented into the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. It is just not a once a year celebration but our Living Hope for today!

A friend made Resurrection Rolls with her daughter and even though we are a day past Easter I plan on making them with my four....because the tomb is still empty!

~And may we marvel!!

{Hope for the Home}: Easter Link Love

Hi! It's me, Erin. Ha! No guest blogger this week.

I am SO sorry about the delay in getting this post up today, but I am in the process of relocating, again. We have been in transition for about 4 weeks now - moving from Wisconsin to Tennessee, by way of Texas and Missouri. Confusing? Yes, I know.

We have been in the car ALL.DAY.LONG. I tried to post this late last night before we left, but my dad's computer was giving me fits. Better late than never, right?

I love Easter. It is absolutely my favorite holiday.

Truth. I am addicted to Cadbury Mini Eggs.

Seriously. Every Easter I make myself sick on them because I know that they will not be in the stores again until next year.

This year I have really had to control myself because I am trying to lose weight for my sister's upcoming wedding. I have only had 2 small bags, individual sized servings. So far I am down 16 lbs. - Wooooohoooo!!! :)

Yes, one reason I love Easter so much is the yummy candy.

Another reason is these little things..

Oh how I love tulips. Such simple beauty. They covered the grounds of my college every spring. They were my wedding flower. Big A and I even had our pictures made in them {at TCU} before we got married, to display at the wedding.

Taken 10 years ago, ha!

I can't help but be joyful when spring is in the air. It's as if God himself is painting his masterpiece on a clean, fresh canvas. Writing his story all over again, for all the world to see.

But of course, the main reason I love Easter is because of the resurrection. It is the very reason why we have Easter. It is the foundation of the Christian faith. Without the resurrection, Jesus is not who he claimed to be.

With this in mind, I want to make sure that Easter at our house is not about egg hunts, bunnies and candy! Don't get me wrong...we do all of these things and have a fabulous time. But I want to make sure my boys know why we do these things. Why we celebrate Easter. Why Jesus died for us.

1. Read the Easter Story {Matthew 28} together as a family. If your children are young, read it from the Jesus Story Bible. Watch this video for the visual story.

2. Download this Free Easter Printable to display in your home and enter to win the Matching Easter Banner.

3. Make Resurrection Eggs.

4. Attend church together as a family - not just at Easter but all year round.

5. Paint Handprint Easter Lambs.

6. Fill your child's Easter basket with Fun Faith Reminders.

7. Bake Resurrection Rolls for Easter Morning. Or prepare an entire Christian Passover Meal.

8. Create a Family Handprint Tree and have everyone add things that God has done for them that they are thankful for onto the palm of their hand, reminding them that Jesus' death on the cross is the greatest thing he ever did for us.

9. Do a service project together as a family. Maybe take a meal to a family in need, reminding everyone that it is important to make sacrifices for others, in the same way that Jesus made the ultimate sacrifice for us on the cross.

10. Display Easter Crosses in your home as a visual reminder to all who enter.

11. Listen to Laura Story's What a Savior or Matt Maher's Christ is Risen.
